Sziasztok, Lívia vagyok. Hi everybody! I’m Livia.
Welcome to HungarianPod101.com’s “Magyar nyelvleckék három percben”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hungarian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "Where" questions in Hungarian.
This time, we are going to ask "When" questions.
Let’s go! Hajrá!
Imagine you want to ask when your roommate is coming back home. You will ask him Mikor jössz haza?
[slowly] Mikor jössz haza?
So let’s break down this question.
First we had-
Mikor, which is the basic translation of "When" in Hungarian.
jössz is the verb jön, "to come", in the 2nd person present tense.
And finally haza which means "home."
So, altogether it is Mikor jössz haza?
"When are you coming home?"
So in Hungarian, "When" is generally translated as the word Mikor. For example, if you want to ask "When were you born?" You say Mikor születtél?
Születni means “to be born”. In the 2nd person simple past, it becomes születtél.
So let’s have a look at another example.
How can you say "When will you arrive?"
It is really simple since it is exactly the same pattern: Mikor érkezel?
First we have Mikor, which is "When"
The second word is érkezel which is the verb érkezni in 2nd person present tense.
In Hungarian, when talking about things occurring in the near future, we simply use the present tense of the verb. The question word stays the same.
If you want to ask a question about duration as in "Since when have you been teaching?" Then you will have to say Mióta tanítasz?
The question word for "since" is Mióta?
Tanítasz is the verb tanít, meaning “to teach” in the 2nd person present tense.
You can simply use the present form in this case as well. Hungarian doesn’t have a separate present continuous tense.
Let’s see how to ask "Until when?" in Hungarian. It’s very easy because you can translate it directly. It becomes - Meddig?
So for example, if you want to ask a friend "Until when are you going to stay here?" It will be Meddig maradsz itt?
But of course there are other ways to ask about time. You can even be more specific by asking about the year, the date or the hour. But you wouldn't use Mikor, or "when". You would literally say "Which year" or "What hour"
For example, you can ask:
- "Which year did you start working?" which will be
Melyik évben kezdtél dolgozni?
- "Which day is good for you?" which will be Melyik nap jó neked? And...
- "What hour can we meet?" Hánykor találkozunk?
Now it’s time for Livia’s Tips.
You can use Meddig to indicate distance as well. For example, if you want to find out where someone on a train is getting off, you can simply say Meddig mész? This means “How far are you going?”
So in this lesson, we learned how to correctly use Mikor, "When" and also its different variations.
In the next lesson we’ll learn more about asking "Who" questions in Hungarian. Would you like to know how to inquire about someone?
I'll be waiting for you in the next Magyar nyelvleckék három percben lesson. Sziasztok!
