INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's your name?”. In Hungarian this is:
Lena: Hogy hívnak?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: Hogy
Michael: meaning "how" in English.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Hogy
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: Hogy
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: hívnak
Michael: meaning "to call" or something like “being called by others”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) hívnak
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: hívnak
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Lena: Hogy hívnak?
{pause}
Michael: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "What's your name?".
Lena: A nevem Miklós.
Michael: "My name is Miklós." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Lena: (Slow) A nevem Miklós.
{pause}
Michael: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Lena: A
Michael: means "the"
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) A
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: A
{Pause}
Michael: And next
Lena: nevem
Michael: meaning "my name" or "my name is"
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) nevem
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: nevem
{Pause}
Michael: And next
Lena: Miklós
Michael: meaning "Miklós".
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Miklós
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: Miklós
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say, "My name is Miklós", and then repeat.
Lena: A nevem Miklós.
{pause}
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace Miklós with Sára.
Lena: Sára
Michael: Sára
Lena: (slow) Sára (regular) Sára
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Sára.
Lena: A nevem Sára.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace Miklós. Say "My name is Sára".
{pause}
Lena: A nevem Sára.
Michael: To use a different phrase, replace Sára with Mária.
Lena: Mária
Michael: Mária
Lena: (slow) Mária (regular) Mária
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Mária.
Lena: A nevem Mária.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name Sára. Say "My name is Mária".
{pause}
Lena: A nevem Mária.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace Mária with Katalin.
Lena: Katalin
Michael: Katalin
Lena: (slow) Katalin (regular) Katalin
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Katalin
Lena: A nevem Katalin.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name Mária. Say, “My name is Katalin.”
{pause}
Lena: A nevem Katalin.
QUIZ
Michael: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Hungary and someone asks you your name. Your name is Miklós. Respond to the question.
Lena: Hogy hívnak? (five seconds) A nevem Miklós.
Michael: This time, , your name is Sára. Respond to the question.
Lena: Hogy hívnak? (five seconds) A nevem Sára.

Lena: Hogy hívnak? (five seconds) A nevem Mária.
Michael: Imagine your name is Katalin. Respond to the question.
Lena: Hogy hívnak? (five seconds) A nevem Katalin.
Michael: Now you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)

Szia Jean-Noël!

Jó válasz! (Good answer.) Well done! :) But don't forget that you could also ask for someone's name with this phrase: 'Hogy hívnak?', meaning: 'How are you called?' or 'How do they call you?'

Thank you for studying with us. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Kedves Alex!

Thank you very much for your question!

Miklós is pronounced with a long "o" like Mikloash.

Sára is pronounced with a short "a" Shara (the second is pronounced like after or alone).

The long vowels and especially the "a" sound is quite tricky in Hungarian! 😎

Hi I am confused between the two speakers - the man says Mik-loash (English phonetics!) and the lady says Mik-loas. He says Shar-ow(l) and she says Shar-a(fter). Could we have a comment on this please? Alex
