INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Whose is this? In Hungarian this is
Lena: Kié ez?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: kié
Michael: meaning “whose” in English.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) kié
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: kié
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: ez
Michael: meaning “this.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) ez
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: ez
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Lena: Kié ez?
{pause}
Michael: Master the following pattern and responses to the question Whose is this?
Lena: Az enyém.
Michael: "It's mine.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Lena: (Slow) Az enyém.
{pause}
Michael: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Lena: az
Michael: means “the”. Since the noun after this article starts with a vowel, you need to say the Hungarian article
Lena: “az”..
Michael: instead of
Lena: “a”.
Michael: Listen to the word one time slowly.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) az
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: az
{Pause}
Michael: And after that
Lena: enyém
Michael: meaning “mine”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) enyém
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: enyém
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say, It's mine., and then repeat.
Lena: Az enyém.
{pause}
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace “mine” with “my friend’s.”
Lena: barátomé
Michael: my friend's
Lena: (slow) barátomé (regular) barátomé
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with my friend's
Lena: A barátomé.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace mine. Say It's my friend's.
{pause}
Lena: A barátomé.
Michael: To make another phrase, replace my friend's with yours.
Lena: tiéd
Michael: yours
Lena: (slow) tiéd (regular) tiéd
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with yours
Lena: A tiéd.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for my friend's. Say It's yours.
{pause}
Lena: A tiéd.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace yours with ours.
Lena: miénk
Michael: ours
Lena: (slow) miénk (regular) miénk
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ours
Lena: A miénk.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for yours. Say It's ours.
{pause}
Lena: A miénk.

Michael: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Hungary, and someone asks you “Who does this belong to?” You want to say “It's mine”. Respond to the question.
