INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Where did you learn Hungarian? In Hungarian this is
Lena: Hol tanultál magyarul?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: hol
Michael: meaning “where” in English.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) hol
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: hol
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: tanultál
Michael: meaning “you learned.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) tanultál
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: tanultál
Michael: And after that
Lena: magyarul
Michael: meaning “in Hungarian”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) magyarul

Michael: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:

Michael: means “in school”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) iskolában
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: iskolában

Lena: tanultam
Michael: meaning something like “I learned”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) tanultam
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: tanultam

Michael: Listen to the speaker say, I learned it in school, and then repeat.
Lena: Iskolában tanultam.

Michael: To use a different phrase, replace “in school” with “at university.”
Lena: egyetemen
Michael: at university
Lena: (slow) egyetemen (regular) egyetemen
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with at university
Lena: Egyetemen tanultam.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace in school. Say I learned it at university.

Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace “at university” with “from a friend.”
Lena: egy barátomtól
Michael: “from a friend”
Lena: (slow) egy barátomtól (regular) egy barátomtól
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with from a friend
Lena: Egy barátomtól tanultam.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase for “at university”. Say I learned it “from a friend.”
