Most of the area is mountainous, both the highest mountain (Kékestető) and the mountain range with the highest average altitude (Bükk) are in this region. The undulating geography deserves to be mentioned not only because of sightseeing reasons, but also because of its aptitude for producing grapes. Several wine regions – including those of Eger and Tokaj – are situated here. The capital and the biggest city of the region is Miskolc. Though the city, which once relied heavily on its industrial output, is not considered to be an attractive tourist destination by many Hungarians, the area is still worthy of a visit because of the neighboring thermal baths and the wine region of Tokaj. The city itself can surprise the visitor, since the service and hospitality industry has improved a lot since the economic recession of the nineties. The capital of Heves county is Eger, one the most beautiful towns in the country. The baroque downtown attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year, just like the surrounding wine region, the great hiking trails and the thermal baths. A várhegy tetején található Fellegvár igazi régészeti kincs, sokáig itt őrizték a magyar koronaékszereket. A vár is a török hódoltság alatt válik szinte használhatatlanná a sok pusztítás miatt. A városban találkozik időről időre a Visegrádi Együttműködés négy tagországa, Lengyelország, Csehország, Szlovákia és Magyarország. A találkozókon regionális kérdésekről, stratégiáról van szó, alapja az 1355-ös Károly Róbert magyar király szervezte hasonló találkozó. 1991-ben indult újra a szervezet. Szentendrét is érdemes meglátogatnia annak, aki még nem telt be korábban a barokk városokkal. A kisváros művészközpont, sok galériát találunk itt, és természetesen templomokat, múzeumokat is. Ez itt Magyarország legtöbb kulturális emlékét felsoroltató régiója, természeti szépségekben sem szűkölködik, igazi turistaparadicsom. ----Formal English---- The Danube Bend The Danube changes its course from an eastward to a southward direction at the Danube Bend, which is the area between Esztergom and Budapest. This is one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, rich in cultural and natural wonders. The first stop along the bend is Esztergom, which has been inhabited by Hungarians since the tenth century. During the Árpád dynasty it was the capital of Hungary. The Primatial Basilica, or as it is more commonly known, the Esztergom basilica stands on Szent István square. This is the tallest building and the biggest religious building in Hungary and it's also the fourth biggest basilica in Europe. The building as we know it today was completed in 1869 in classicist style. Franz Liszt composed Missa Solemnis in honor of its consecration. Another landmark in Esztergom is the Primatial Palace. The Christian Museum on the second floor of the neo-renaissance palace is the richest collection of religious works in Hungary. The reconstruction of the Mária Valéria bridge brought a lot of changes into the life of the city. Since the Danube is a natural border here, walking across the bridge will take you to Slovakia. Moving towards Budapest, the next town will be Budapest. A royal residence for centuries, it lost its significance during the Turkish occupation. On top of Castle Hill, the Fellegvár (citadel) is a real archeological treasure; the royal regalia were kept here for a long time. Ez Magyarország egyik legszebb tája, kulturális és természeti értékekben is rendkívül gazdag. A Dunakanyar mentén az első megállóhely Esztergom, ez a város már a 10. századtól kezdve lakott. Az Árpád-korban Magyarország fővárosa. A Szent István téren áll a Főszékesegyház épülete, vagy közismertebb nevén az Esztergomi bazilika. Ez Magyarország legmagasabb épülete, legnagyobb egyházi épülete és Európa negyedik legnagyobb bazilikája. Az épület, amely jelenlegi formájában 1869 óta áll, klasszicista stílusban épült. Felszentelésének tiszteletére írta Liszt Ferenc az Esztergomi misét. Esztergom másik meghatározó épülete a Prímási palota. A neoreneszánsz stílusú palota második emeletén találjuk a Keresztény Múzeumot, amely Magyarország leggazdagabb egyházi gyűjteménye. A város életében nagy változást hozott a Mária Valéria híd újjáépítése 2001-ben. Mivel itt a Duna határfolyó, így a hídon átsétálva már Szlovákiában találjuk magunkat. Budapest felé tovább haladva a következő város Visegrád. Sokáig királyi székhely, fontosságát csak a török hódoltság alatt veszíti el. A várhegy tetején található Fellegvár igazi régészeti kincs, sokáig itt őrizték a magyar koronaékszereket. A vár is a török hódoltság alatt válik szinte használhatatlanná a sok pusztítás miatt. A városban találkozik időről időre a Visegrádi Együttműködés négy tagországa, Lengyelország, Csehország, Szlovákia és Magyarország. A találkozókon regionális kérdésekről, stratégiáról van szó, alapja az 1355-ös Károly Róbert magyar király szervezte hasonló találkozó. 1991-ben indult újra a szervezet. Szentendrét is érdemes meglátogatnia annak, aki még nem telt be korábban a barokk városokkal. A kisváros művészközpont, sok galériát találunk itt, és természetesen templomokat, múzeumokat is. A Dunakanyar mentén számtalan kis falu fekszik, rengeteg látnivalóval. Ez itt Magyarország legtöbb kulturális emlékét felsoroltató régiója, természeti szépségekben sem szűkölködik, igazi turistaparadicsom. ----Formal English---- The Danube Bend The Danube changes its course from an eastward to a southward direction at the Danube Bend, which is the area between Esztergom and Budapest. This is one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, rich in cultural and natural wonders. The first stop along the bend is Esztergom, which has been inhabited by Hungarians since the tenth century. During the Árpád dynasty it was the capital of Hungary. The Primatial Basilica, or as it is more commonly known, the Esztergom basilica stands on Szent István square. This is the tallest building and the biggest religious building in Hungary and it's also the fourth biggest basilica in Europe. The building as we know it today was completed in 1869 in classicist style. Franz Liszt composed Missa Solemnis in honor of its consecration. Another landmark in Esztergom is the Primatial Palace. The Christian Museum on the second floor of the neo-renaissance palace is the richest collection of religious works in Hungary. The reconstruction of the Mária Valéria bridge brought a lot of changes into the life of the city. Since the Danube is a natural border here, walking across the bridge will take you to Slovakia. Moving towards Budapest, the next town will be Budapest. A royal residence for centuries, it lost its significance during the Turkish occupation. On top of Castle Hill, the Fellegvár (citadel) is a real archeological treasure; the royal regalia were kept here for a long time.
