KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is...
Lena: hidegfronti hatás
Eric: Which means “cold front effect”
Lena: Hidegfront literally means a “cold front” and hatás means “effect”. You can also use the noun fronthatás to say “front effect”, in other words, the effect of a weather front on people like a headache or muscle pain.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Lena: Sure. For example, you can say...Kedden hidegfronti hatást fogunk érezni.
Eric: which means “We are going to feel a cold front effect on Tuesday.” Okay, what's the next phrase?
Lena: lehűl a levegő
Eric: This means “the air cools down”
Lena: The noun levegő means “air”. The verb lehűl means “to cool down”. Lehűl is an intransitive verb. The transitive pair of this verb is lehűt.
Eric: Can we use this verb with other nouns?
Lena: Sure, you can say, for example.. A hűtő lehűti az ételeket.
Eric: This means “The fridge cools down the food.”
Lena: Or you can rephrase it and say.. Az ételek lehűlnek a hűtőben.
Eric: “The food cools down in the fridge.” Lena, can you give us an example using this phrase?
Lena: You can say...Vigyél magaddal kabátot, estére lehűl a levegő.
Eric:which means “Take your coat, the air cools down in the evening.” Okay, what's the last phrase?
Lena: várható csúcshőmérséklet
Eric: “the maximum expected temperature”
Lena: The noun csúcshőmérséklet is composed of csúcs which means “summit,” or “peak” and hőmérséklet means “temperature”. Várható comes from the conditional participle form of vár which means “to wait, to expect”. Literally, it means “...that one can expect”.
Eric: Can you give us an example using our phrase?
Lena: A várható csúcshőmérséklet nem haladja meg a 10 fokot.
Eric: .. which means “The maximum expected temperature will not be over 10 degrees.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus.
