kasza and kassza

Postby languagefile_3271 » April 14th, 2016 6:17 pm

In the long and short consonant section of the "all about" lessons in Hungarian we come across the words kasza and kassza. now after understanding the alphabet I would have pronounced Kasza as kasa and kassza as kashsa. the letter sz making an S sound in Hungarian but when this lesson is spoken it says double consonants are just stressed. I just want a definite answer to whether I pronounce the word as is or if there is a double S I ignore the sz letter and the treatment of a double consonant takes precedence over it.

Hello!

Thank you for your question.

In Hungarian, the long form of "sz" is simply written "ssz" instead of "szsz". The same rule is true for other double consonants when they are long:

gy - ggy
cs - ccs
ly - lly
ny - nny
ty - tty
zs - zzs

When pronouncing, we don't pronounce the first letter, it only serve as a way to double the sound. In this case, kassza will be pronounced "kasa" but with a well pronounced stress on the s sound. Here, the first s, so the sound "sch" is not pronounced.
