Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Hungarian Season 1, Lesson 12 - Asking What Someone is Doing. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question ‘What are you doing?’ in Hungarian.

Eric: Here's the informal way to ask 'What are you doing?' in Hungarian.
Lena: [Normal] Mit csinálsz?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'what'.
Lena: [Normal] mit [Slow] mit
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'you are doing'.
Lena: [Normal] csinálsz [Slow] csinálsz
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'What are you doing?'.
Lena: [Slow] Mit csinálsz? [Normal] Mit csinálsz?
Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, 'What are you doing?'.
Lena: [Normal] Mit csinál?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'what'.

Eric: Last is the word meaning 'You are doing'(formal).

Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Lena: This is a really common question when you talk to a friend on the phone or if you bump into a friend on the street. When someone you don't know acts suspiciously next to you and you want to find out what he or she is doing, ask the question in the formal way, then you won't sound rude.
