| In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb megy which means "to go" in Hungarian. |
| In this lesson, we will talk more about common Hungarian verbs. |
| The second verb we are learning is csinál, which means "to do." But as in English, you’ll see that the meaning of this verb is quite broad and it can be found in many different situations. |
| So imagine someone asks you Mit csinálsz? |
| That means "What are you doing?" in the informal form. |
| So if you are doing your homework, for example, you will say in Hungarian- A leckémet csinálom. |
| [slowly] A leckémet csinálom. |
| So let’s break down this answer. |
| First is the noun. Lecke means “homework”. Now we have to say “my homework”, which you can do by adding the suffix -m. Remember how vowels change depending on suffixes? It’s the same here. So the word becomes leckém. |
| Now, in Hungarian, there’s a different noun suffix to indicate the object in a sentence. This is -t. |
| However, the two consonants are hard to pronounce together, so we add an e and the word becomes leckémet. |
| Plus, since we are doing a specific thing, we have to add the definite article in front of the noun. A leckémet. |
| Now let’s see the verb. We’ve talked about how to conjugate verbs in the present tense a few times. However, the conjugation is different when there’s an object in the sentence. |
| Let’s see: |
| csinálom - I do something |
| csinálod - you do something (singular) |
| csinálja - he or she does something |
| csináljuk - we do something |
| csináljátok - you do something (plural) |
| csinálják - they do something |
| So in the case of “I am doing my homework”, it becomes A leckémet csinálom. |
| Note that in Hungarian, you can use the present tense to say that you are doing something right now. We don’t have a separate present continuous tense. |
| If you want to stress “right now”, you can add the word épp. |
| For example- Épp a leckémet csinálom. means |
| “I’m doing my homework right now.” |
| The verb csinál can be used if you are actually in the process of doing something. The word for “prepare”, készít, is more commonly used to express that you are getting something ready, like ebédet készítek preparing lunch, or ruhákat készítek, making clothes, for example. |
| Now it’s time for Livia’s Tips. |
| In Hungarian, we often say Mit csinálunk ma este? which means “What are we going to do tonight?” |
| For example, if you are with some friends at night and you haven't decided your plans yet, you can ask this question – it will sound very natural Mit csinálunk ma este? |
