Lesson Transcript

Sziasztok, Lívia vagyok. Hi everybody! I’m Livia.
Welcome to HungarianPod101.com’s “Magyar nyelvleckék három percben”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hungarian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "What" questions in Hungarian.
This time, we are going to ask "Where" questions.
Imagine you want to ask where your friend is now. You will ask him Hol vagy? This is the exact translation of "Where are you?"
[slowly] Hol vagy?
So let’s break down this question.
First we had-
Hol, which is the basic translation of "Where" in Hungarian.
Then, vagy, which is "are", the 2nd person form of the verb van, which we have already studied.
So, altogether it is Hol vagy?, “Where are you?"
So in Hungarian, "Where" is mainly translated as Hol.
For example, if you want to ask "Where do you live?" You will say Hol laksz?
The question word stays the same, no matter the person or the level of politeness.
But be careful, because if you want to ask "Where do you come from?" you will have to use a different word - Honnan instead of Hol.
So that question is Honnan jöttél?
The word also changes if you are asking about the direction or final destination. If you say, for example, Hová mész?
This means "Where are you going to?"
When you want to ask about a route, you can also say Hogyan which literally means "how."
For example, you can often hear Hogyan mész Budapestre? This means "By what means are you going to Budapest?" or “Which route are you taking to Budapest?”
The grammatical rule for Hol, Honnan or Hogyan remains the same – they all have to be followed by a verb.
Hol vagy? - here the verb is van meaning “to be”
Honnan jöttél? here the verb is jön "to come"
Hová mész? Here the verb is megy “to go”.
Before ending this lesson, let’s look back at all the ways to translate "Where" in Hungarian:
- Hol is the basic "Where", as in "Where do you live?" Hol laksz?
- Honnan refers to the origin or the starting point, as in "Where do you come from?" Honnan jöttél?
- Hová refers to the destination or arrival point, as in "Where are you going to?"
Hová mész?
- Hogyan refers to the method, or the desired route, as in "By what means are you going to Budapest?" Hogyan mész?
Now it’s time for Livia’s tips.
If you ask about a stranger’s country of origin, you can use "Where do you come from", Honnan jöttél? Or to sound a bit less direct, you can ask Honnan származol? That can be translated as "From where are you native?"
In this lesson, we learned how to correctly use the Hungarian word for "Where", Hol, and also its different variations.
Now you can avoid getting lost!
In the next lesson we’ll learn more about asking questions, this time using "When" in Hungarian. Do you know how to ask someone when they are coming home, for example?
We’ll be talking about that in the next Magyar nyelvleckék három percben.
Sziasztok!

Kedves 123456789!

Igen, they have exactly the same meaning in this context.

But the verb "él" means to "live", which can be used in a general context, while "lakik" is only to be used when talking about a place what the person calls home..

ex. A kutya 15 évig él.

Magyarországon lakok = Magyarországon élek.

And does "Hol élsz" mean the same thing as "Hol laksz"? Köszönöm szépen.
