INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Have you been to Budapest? In Hungarian this is
Lena: Voltál már Budapesten?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: voltál
Michael: meaning “have you been” in English.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) voltál
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: voltál
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: már
Michael: meaning “already”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) már
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: már
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Lena: Voltál már
{pause}
Michael: Next is
Lena: Budapesten
Michael: meaning “in Budapest.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Budapesten
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: Budapesten
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Lena: Voltál már Budapesten?
{pause}
Michael: Master the following pattern and responses to the question Have you been to Budapest?
Lena: Igen, kétszer.
Michael: "Yes, I've been twice.” or literally “Yes, twice.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Lena: (Slow) Igen, kétszer.
{pause}
Michael: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Lena: Igen
Michael: means yes.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Igen
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: Igen
{Pause}
Michael: And after that
Lena: kétszer
Michael: meaning “twice”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) kétszer
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: kétszer
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I've been twice.”, and then repeat.
Lena: Igen, kétszer.
{pause}
Michael: To use a different phrase, replace twice with three times.
Lena: három alkalommal
Michael: three times
Lena: (slow) három alkalommal (regular) három alkalommal
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with three times
Lena: Igen, három alkalommal.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace twice. Say Yes, I've been three times.
{pause}
Lena: Igen, három alkalommal.
Michael: To use a different phrase, replace three times with five times.
Lena: öt alkalommal
Michael: five times
Lena: (slow) öt alkalommal (regular) öt alkalommal
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with five times
Lena: Igen, öt alkalommal.

Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with once
