INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Do you speak Hungarian? In Hungarian this is
Lena: Beszélsz magyarul?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: beszélsz
Michael: meaning “you talk” or “you speak” in English.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) beszélsz
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: beszélsz
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: magyarul
Michael: meaning “in Hungarian.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) magyarul
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: magyarul
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Lena: Beszélsz magyarul?
{pause}
Michael: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Do you speak Hungarian?”
Lena: Igen, elég jól beszélek.
Michael: "Yes, I speak quite well.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Lena: (Slow) Igen, elég jól beszélek.
{pause}
Michael: To say " no", in a simple way, just say:
Lena: Nem, nem beszélek magyarul.
Michael: Which is like saying “No I don't speak Hungarian.” Let's hear it slowly.
Lena: (Slowly) Nem, nem beszélek magyarul.
Michael: And one more time at normal speed:
Lena: Nem, nem beszélek magyarul.
Michael: Now let's break down our response from the beginning. The first word is:
Lena: Igen
Michael: meaning “yes.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Igen
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: Igen
{Pause}
Michael: And after that
Lena: elég jól
Michael: meaning “quite well.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) elég jól
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: elég jól
Michael: And next
Lena: beszélek
Michael: meaning “I speak.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) beszélek
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: beszélek
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I speak quite well.”, and then repeat.
Lena: Igen, elég jól beszélek.
{pause}
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace quite well with somewhat.
Lena: valamennyit
Michael: somewhat
Lena: (slow) valamennyit (regular) valamennyit
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with somewhat
Lena: Igen, beszélek valamennyit.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase for quite well. Say Yes, I speak it somewhat.
{pause}
Lena: Igen, beszélek valamennyit.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace somewhat with fluently.
Lena: folyékonyan
Michael: fluently
Lena: (slow) folyékonyan (regular) folyékonyan
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with fluently
Lena: Igen, folyékonyan beszélek.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase for somewhat. Say Yes, I speak it fluently.
{pause}
Lena: Igen, folyékonyan beszélek.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace “fluently” with “a little”
Lena: egy kicsit
Michael: a little
Lena: (slow) egy kicsit (regular) egy kicsit
Michael: Then, place the verb..
Lena: beszélek..
Michael: before the adverb to make it sound natural in Hungarian.
Lena: Igen, beszélek egy kicsit.
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “a little”
Lena: Igen, beszélek egy kicsit.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Say Yes, I speak it “a little”.
{pause}
Lena: Igen, beszélek egy kicsit.

Michael: Now you want to answer that you speak it somewhat. Answer the speaker's question.
