INTRODUCTION
Michael: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hungarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Can you play musical instruments? In Hungarian this is
Lena: Tudsz hangszereken játszani?
Michael: The first word in the question is
Lena: Tudsz
Michael: meaning “can you,”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Tudsz
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Lena: Tudsz
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Lena: hangszereken
Michael: meaning “instruments.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) hangszereken
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: hangszereken
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Lena: Tudsz hangszereken
{pause}
Michael: And next
Lena: játszani
Michael: meaning “to play”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) játszani
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: játszani
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Lena: Tudsz hangszereken játszani?
{pause}
Michael: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question Can you play musical instruments?
Lena: Igen, tudok zongorázni.
Michael: "Yes, I can play the piano.." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Lena: (Slow) Igen, tudok zongorázni.
{pause}
Michael: To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Lena: Nem, nem tudok.
Michael: Which is like saying “No, I can’t”, in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Lena: (Slowly) Nem, nem tudok.
Michael: And one more time at normal speed:
Lena: Nem, nem tudok.
Michael: Now let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word:
Lena: Igen
Michael: means “yes.”
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) Igen
Michael: Now repeat
Lena: Igen
{Pause}
Michael: And next
Lena: tudok
Michael: meaning “I can”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) tudok
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: tudok
{Pause}
Michael: And next
Lena: zongorázni
Michael: meaning “to play the piano”.
Lena: (Slow, by syllable) zongorázni
Michael: Now repeat.
Lena: zongorázni
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say, Yes, I can play the piano., and then repeat.
Lena: Igen, tudok zongorázni.
{pause}
Michael: To use a different phrase, replace “to play the piano” with “to play the violin.”
Lena: hegedűlni
Michael: “to play the violin”
Lena: (slow) hegedűlni (regular) hegedűlni
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “to play the violin”
Lena: Igen, tudok hegedűlni.
Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “to play the piano” with “to play the violin.” Say “Yes, I can play the violin.”

Michael: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “to play the violin” with “to play the guitar.” Say “Yes, I can play the guitar.”
{pause}
Lena: Igen, tudok gitározni.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace “to play the guitar” with “to play the trumpet”

Hi Keith,

The ending does not depend on the sound, there is no exact rule in this case.

Unfortunately we have to memorize the words. 😎

Thanks for your comment!

The word endings for the various instruments differ - azni , ulni , ozni , alni . Does the ending depend upon the variation in sound ? What is the rule ?

Szia,

tudok szaxofonozni. :)

This week I was the first time in our "Language Café" on the Hungarian Table with Erasmus students and I was the only german sitting there. :smile:

I realized how MUCH I have to learn only for small talk, but the people there will help me (and they gave me a piece of sáloncukor for motivation :heart:) and the lessons I learned here helped me also already very much.

Boldog karácsony kívánok! :)
