| Lena: Hello. I'm Lena. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn some useful phrases for making a presentation in Hungarian. The conversation takes place at a university. |
| Lena: The speaker is Tom. |
| Eric: He is making a presentation, so he will use formal Hungarian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
| Tom: Welcome everybody. Over the next few minutes, I would like to talk about the current migrant situation in Hungary. |
| : As many of you know, Hungary became a target of refugees as a border country of the Schengen Agreement. |
| : The most important consequence is that, according to the treaty, Hungary can not let refugees continue their journey without registration. |
| : But why does migration cause such a problem? |
| : First of all, taking care of the migrants and ensuring their basic living conditions costs a lot. |
| : Secondly, their cultural and religious backgrounds, as well as their values, are considerably different from those generally known in Europe. |
| : Thirdly, such a large wave of migrants is unmanageable without international help. |
| : Finally, the social and economic consequences of migration in the long term will be felt through generations. |
| : Solving this problem requires international cooperation, and above all, mutual adaptation from both migrants and the hosting state. |
| : Are there any questions related to what has been said? |

| Eric: Lena, I know that the Euro is accepted everywhere in Hungary, but generally people use Hungarian money as well. |
| Lena: Right. Do you know who are the men that are on Hungarian banknotes? |
| Eric: No! But I guess they are national heroes or people who played an important role in Hungarian history. |
| Lena: Yes! For example, on the 500Ft banknote, you find Rákóczi Ferenc II. |
| Eric: He was a Hungarian noble and prince of Transylvania who led the revolution against the Habsburgs in 1703. |
| Lena: Exactly. On the 1000Ft, you find Hunyadi Mátyás, King of Hungary between 1458-90. On the 2000 Ft banknote, we see Bethlen Gábor, a prince of Transylvania between 1613-29. |
| Eric: And what about the 5000 Ft banknote? |
| Lena: We have the picture of Széchenyi István, the “Greatest Hungarian”, politician and statesman on it. The 10000 Ft note has a picture of Szent István, the first King of Hungary, who was crowned in 1001. |
| Eric: And who’s on the biggest banknote of 20000 Ft? |
| Lena: Here you will see a picture of Deák Ferenc, Minister of Justice during the Revolution in 1848. |

| Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
| Lena: Nagymértékben különbözik |
| Eric: Which means “to be considerably different” |
| Lena: Nagymértékben comes from nagy or “big”, and mérték which means “scale”. Nagymértékben. |
| Eric: Literally, this means “on a large scale”. |
| Lena: Különbözik is an intransitive verb that means “to be different”. |
| Eric: Does it have the transitive pair? |
| Lena: Yes. It is megkülönböztet, “to make a difference”. Különbözik comes from the adjective különb, which means “finer, better”. The verb is usually combined with the suffixes -tól, or -től which mean “from” in English. |
| Eric: Lena, can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Lena: Sure. For example, you can say.. A kettő egymástól nagymértékben különbözik. |

| Eric: “Main cause”. |
| Lena: The word életkörülmények is composed of élet, meaning “life”, and körülmény, which is “condition” in English. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using our phrase? |
| Lena: Sure. Rosszak az alapvető életkörülmények Európához képest. |
| Eric: .. which means “The basic living conditions are bad compared to Europe.” Okay, what's the last phrase? |
| Lena: Kulturális és vallási háttér |
| Eric: “Cultural and religious background” |
| Lena: Kulturális is an adjective coming from kultúra or “culture” in English. Vallási comes from vallás which means “religion”. Háttér is a noun referring to “background”. For example...A kulturális és vallási háttér befolyásolja az emberek viselkedését. |
| Eric: This means “The cultural and religious background influences people's behavior.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Lena: It’s no surprise that the introduction is the most important part of your presentation. |
| Eric: The introduction usually includes a greeting, a brief presentation about yourself, a couple of words about the purpose, and the outline of the presentation. Let’s see some expressions that will be useful for this crucial part! And the first expression is… |
| Lena: Sok szeretettel köszöntök mindenkit! |
| Eric: This means “Welcome everyone”. After this, you can add the topic of your presentation. You can start with... |
| Lena: Az előadásban arról szeretnék beszélni, hogy... |
| Eric: Which means “In this presentation, I would like to talk about…” |
| Lena: Right. For example...Az előadásban arról szeretnék beszélni, hogy milyen következményei vannak a válságnak. |
| Eric: “In this presentation, I would like to talk about the consequences of the crisis.” Lena, are there other useful phrases for opening a presentation? |
| Lena: Of course! For instance...Ma azt fogjuk megvitatni, hogy... |
| Eric: “Today we will discuss...” |
| Lena: Another one is...Az előadás szerkezete/menete a következő: |
| Eric: In English, this would be “The outline of the presentation is the following...” |
| Lena: You can also start your presentation by saying...Az előadás alatt a következő kérdéseket vitatjuk meg... |
| Eric: Which means “During the presentation, we will discuss the following questions…” Great! Let’s move on. In the main part, you should express several points related to the topic. It usually helps with understanding if you mention all the points briefly before getting into the details. For introducing enumerations, you can use the following phrases.. |

| Eric: “Amongst others…” |

| Eric: “Between the causes, we find…” Ok! Next we might go into the actual points. Listeners, you can find these, as well as other useful phrases for connecting ideas in the lesson notes, so, please be sure to check them out. Now we’ll move to the last part of the presentation. In this last part, you’ll do a quick overview of what had been said during the presentation, and only add some conclusions at the end. |
